Since 1994, Carroll County Foundation has been bringing together charitable donors, community leaders and nonprofit organizations to make a meaningful difference throughout Carroll County.

Who We Are

Carroll County Foundation is a philanthropic and charitable service organization affiliated with Stark Community Foundation. It is a source of lasting support for local causes and trusted partner for donors. The Foundation was created in 1994 and is led by a local volunteer board made up of community leaders who share a commitment to building a strong and vibrant future for Carroll County. Current members of our board include Chair Sean R. H. Smith, Vice Chair Robert Wirkner, Beau Brace, John Clark, John Davis, Rick Dawson, Janice Kishman, Adam Lumley and Chris Shepherd.

WHAT WE DO

We help donors strengthen and improve Carroll County through the creation of their own charitable funds. Our Board of Governors oversees The Carroll Community Fund, which is used exclusively to support local projects and programs that address the ever-changing needs in Carroll County.

  • Family of Donors: Within Carroll County Foundation, there are 40 charitable funds, each created by donors to support the causes they care about most. Through our affiliate partnership with Stark Community Foundation, we offer many options to help donors meet their charitable goals while receiving the maximum tax deductibility.
  • Grant Program: Our competitive grant program, funded by a permanent endowment fund advised by our board, addresses local issues in Carroll County. Grants have supported meaningful organizations like Brown Local Schools, Carroll County District Library, Carroll County Friendship Center, Malvern Christian Care Center, Military Veterans and the Minerva Senior Center.

Currently, Carroll County Foundation has assets valued at more than $14 million. Since inception, more than $10 million has been awarded from all Carroll County Foundation charitable funds to causes in Carroll County and beyond.

Our Story

Elsie and Don Sickafoose and Lois and Bob Newell founded Carroll County Foundation. Don and Bob’s friendship goes back many decades to 1937 and they remained friends throughout the years.

Through much hard work, Don Sickafoose prospered as a farmer, dairyman, cattleman, airport operator, airplane dealer, flying instructor, oilman and owner of the Magnolia Drag Strip. Life was good to Don and his family, and they wanted to help others in Carroll County.

Don contacted his longtime friend Bob Newell, who was a very well-known and respected auctioneer, farmer, cattleman and member of many civic and service organizations, to discuss how they could help local causes and people who really needed help.

Together with a diverse group of Carroll County leaders, they met with Stark Community Foundation to begin the process of establishing Carroll County Foundation as a public charity under the umbrella of Stark Community Foundation. The Sickafooses and Newells were the first to establish charitable funds in the newly-formed Carroll County Foundation in 1994.

Through an affiliate partnership with Stark Community Foundation, Carroll County Foundation benefits from Stark Community Foundation's experienced staff, administrative support and fiduciary management. This affiliation allows Carroll County Foundation to streamline operations while providing increased opportunities to develop and grow a solid base of philanthropic support.
